ADMISSIONS

International Dentist Education Program (IDEP)

CURRENTLY BEING UPDATED.

The 2015 IDEP Admissions Process will begin on May 1, 2014.
Formal applications for 2015 admissions will be accepted from August 1 to October 31, 2014

The IDEP offers qualified graduates of foreign dental programs the opportunity to earn the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center Dental School in San Antonio, Texas (UTHSCSA) and affiliated satellite sites. Successful completion of a prematriculation training course and the advanced standing placement DDS program will allow graduates to take state or regional board examinations to be eligible for dental licensure and dental practice within the United States.

The UTHSCSA IDEP is a full-time, daily program and has its own admissions and application forms. The accepted 12 students will start remote online distance learning in March 2015 and local hands-on training at the dental school in San Antonio in May 2015 with graduation anticipated in May 2017. The IDEP program consists of a prematriculation training course to review the first 2 years of dental school and then matriculation through the 3rd and 4th years of the undergraduate dental program with classroom lectures and direct patient care in the general practice group, departmental rotation, and community-based clinics.

Projected tuition and fees are estimates only and are subject to annual review and change. The estimates of annual living expenses in San Antonio, Texas for students making their own arrangements for Room & Board and Travel are provided by the UTHSCSA Financial Aid Office. The UTHSCSA campus has no dormitories or other housing accommodations. Ample numbers of apartments and rental homes are available in the immediate area. Most require a 6-12 month lease and a security deposit. Payment of all annual IDEP tuition and fees is required for continued enrollment in the program.

Residency Classification and Immigration Status

The determination of residency classification for admission and tuition purposes is governed by statutes enacted by the Texas Legislature and rules and regulations promulgated by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Individuals selected to attend the IDEP program will be required to complete the Residency Questionnaire for The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio before starting the program to determine whether the student is a resident or nonresident of Texas.

The Office of International Services (OIS) at UTHSCSA has determined that the F-1 category is the most appropriate visa status for non-immigrant status accepted students to attend the IDEP program as a full-time dental student. Only after official acceptance for the IDEP program will the IDEP office initiate the F Certificate of Eligibility Application Form and gather additional required documents and submit them to OIS as a complete packet. OIS will review the complete packet and determine if the accepted student is eligible for an F-1 non-immigrant visa. Once OIS determines that the F-1 Federal Regulations have been satisfied, they will create the I-20 on the SEVIS system. The UTHSCSA OIS will send the I-20 to the accepted student after approval of the I-20 by the Dept. of Homeland Security.

Financial Aid

Acceptance into the IDEP is not a guarantee of eligibility for financial aid. Financial aid is awarded on the basis of financial need and citizenship to eligible students - those that are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens. A Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) may be downloaded electronically from the US Department of Education to determine eligibility at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for the IDEP class starting in 2015 is October 31, 2014. The completed application and all supporting documents must be received by the IDEP office before this date or postmarked no later than this date. Incomplete applications will be kept on file, but they will not be considered for the class starting in 2014. An email from the IDEP office will be sent to the applicant once their application is complete. Please note that information regarding the status of an applicant or an application cannot be released over the phone.
