2007 March 13 Dental School’s Third Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament
spacerFriday, April 27th, golfers of all levels, abilities, and handicaps will tee off at 8 a.m. at the SilverHorn Golf Club of Texas just off Bitters Road to support the Health Science Center Dental School’s Third Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. Last year’s participation of Health Science Center students, staff, community leaders, donors, and dental alumni helped raise more than $12,000 in scholarships.[more]
2006 August 22 Prosthodontics department helps Laredo athletes keep healthy smiles
spacerApproximately 350 Laredo-area student athletes gathered in Laredo this weekend to participate in the Laredo Mouth Guard Program. The service, provided by the Health Science Center’s prosthodontics department, has become a South Texas tradition and helps prevent injury to athletes’ mouths.[more]
2006 August 08 Dental School, School of Medicine rank 2nd in U.S. in Hispanic grads
spacerBoth the Dental School and the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio ranked second in the country in the number of Hispanics obtaining graduate professional degrees after the 2004-2005 academic year, according to rankings reported this summer by the Virginia-based magazine Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.[more]
2006 June 01 New dental tool helps detect tooth decay in its earliest stages
spacerA toothbrush and a string of mint-flavored dental floss are essential to 6-year-old Natalie Hoffmann’s bedtime routine. Ever since she learned about the dangers of the dreaded cavity creep, Natalie makes certain to set aside time each day to brush her teeth. Thanks to Health Science Center husband-and-wife team, Kevin Donly, D.D.S., M.S., professor and chair of pediatric dentistry, and Adriana Segura, D.D.S., M.S., professor of general dentistry, Natalie and other children now have another tool to aid them in their rigorous regimen.[more]
2006 June 01 Sleep Solutions: New Center for Dental Sleep Medicine helps adults cope with common disorders
spacerResearchers at the Health Science Center and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie Murphy Division, have established the new Center for Dental Sleep Medicine to research, diagnose and treat obstructive sleep apnea using the latest methods. Health Science Center collaborators are from the Dental School’s departments of dental diagnostic science, restorative dentistry, and oral and maxillofacial surgery, and the Medical School’s department of otolaryngology.[more]
2006 May 09 Amazing support teams come to aid of watery Dental School
spacer"Fantastic effort," said Kenneth Kalkwarf, D.D.S., M.S., dean of the Dental School. "A heck of a job," said Michael Charlton, Ph.D., assistant vice president for risk management and safety. "Those who were here deserve a lot of credit," said William Dodge, D.D.S., vice dean of the Dental School. "It’s not bad to have this kind of catastrophe and be back up and running in 72 hours," said Darrell Maatsch, assistant vice president for campus operations and facilities.[more]

2006 January 10 Dental School is among first in nation to use portable X-ray system
spacerAt first glance, it looks like a portable power drill you’d get at a local hardware store. But if you look closely, you’ll see the word “X-ray” printed in large red type near the control buttons. The Nomad, a cordless hand-held intra-oral X-ray machine, is among the latest developments in portable X-ray systems, and the Dental School at the Health Science Center is one of only three universities in the nation to have it. 2006 January 03 Cronin named Educator of the Year by the ACP
spacerCongratulations to Robert J. Cronin, Jr., D.D.S., M.S., professor and director of postdoctoral prosthodontics. He was named the Educator of the Year by the American College of Prosthodontics (ACP). This is the second consecutive year that a professor at the Health Science Center has received this prestigious award. Lily Garcia, D.D.S., M.S., professor and chair of the department of prosthodontics, was last year’s recipient. [more]
